I am a retired clergy and have served in religious communities for 30+ years. I have a multi-disciplinary academic background and have held teaching appointments in different universities in several disciplines. I began my academic career since 1979 teaching Clinical Nutrition at the Beijing Union Hospital, but I took an increasing interest in the growth of Christianity in China, about which I have published several authoritative reference books including Protestantism in Contemporary China (Cambridge University Press, 1993) and Understanding World Christianity: China ( Fortress Press, 2019), as well as over 100 academic articles and chapters.

Before joining HKU as a Research Associate, I was an Honorary Fellow of the Universities Service Center for China Studies, CUHK, until January 2021, researching China’s religious policy and its implications for the BRI. I have had the privilege to work and travel in every province in China with more than two dozen national minority groups under different projects. As my interests expanded, I have worked, taught and conducted field research in more than a dozen countries in Afro-Eurasia, from Kuwait to Iran, and from Mongolia to Romania. I have been to 40 of the 67 BRI countries. One of my academic interests has been the emigration of Chinese nationals to other countries since the 1990s, and I have been following this population migration with a focus on inter and intra religious dynamics and their sociopolitical implications. As a BRINFAITH collaborator, I will continue to examine this religious dynamic vis-a-vis the geopolitical re-configuration of the current BRI.
